A history of the
Department of Earth and Environmental Science
formerly Department of Geology
at the University of Pennsylvania has been published:
Faul, Carol, 1985. A history of geology at the University of Pennsylvania: Benjamin Franklin and the Rest. Geological Society of America, Centennial Special Volume 1, p. 377-390.
Eleven portraits hanging in the lobby of Hayden Hall show persons connected with the University of Pennsylvania who represent specific steps in the advance of Earth science. The portraits hanging in 2021 represent only former professors of the department who were all white males. Five of these portraits will be replaced in the not too distant future by portraits of a professor, lecturers, and Ph.D. recipients of the department who were or are women or members of a minority.
Information on all portraits will be presented here after this ongoing project is complete.
